Get Out There and Get in Shape!

It’s the weekend and the weather is going to be beautiful!  Or is it?  Here are some tips to start an excercise program on a budget.  First, get a buddy and keep each other motivated.  It is always easier to work out when you have a partner.  Time flies when you’re having fun!  Ask your spouse, neighbor or friend.  Set up a day and time.  Set a reminder on your phone.  Second, make it a habit.  It gets easier if you designate a day and time and length of activity.  Most of us have cell phones with a reminder feature, use it.  Third, start out simply, walk outside if the weather is nice.  Gradually build up pace to raise your heart rate.  As you progress in your training walk a little further each time.  TIP: Get a pedometer.  You can see how far you actually went!  It is a great motivator.

Moms-if you have a little one in a stroller, you have a built-in work out!  Take your little angel for a walk.  They’ll sleep while you get some “me” time.  If the weather is bad go to your local mall, they usually have walking classes in the morning.  You can meet other moms and get a little adult conversation in too!  If your kids are older go to the park.  Playing with your kids is a work out!  Tire them out for nap time and feel energized yourself.  Play tag, Hide-and-go-seek, or red rover, steal the bacon or other games you played as a child.  Jump rope games.  The point is get up and move around.

Couples and Singles, there are many trails for walking and biking right in your own back yard.  These are free and open to the public.  Check your park system website.  Some in our area are Turk Park in Doylestown, Harleysville has one that crosses rt63, Valley Forge Park is amazing if you are near there.  Another place is Tyler State Park in Newtown, Peace Valley Park in Chalfont, Nockimixon in Quakertown, Green Lane Park in Green Lane, and Whites’ Rd Park in Lansdale.  Some of these tails also include some outdoor work out equipment.  If you live in a condo or development sometimes your fees include a gym or club house check it out.  Get your money’s worth.  Also a lot of healthcare providers reimburse you for gym membership.  Check it out:)
